Good morning, this is Dr. Marvin. You’re listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry, and let’s talk dentistry. Actually, let’s talk more about natural dentistry. That’s what we talk about here at the Center for Natural Dentistry. It’s my office. Dr. Godes and I treat patients from all over the world.

A patient this last week came from Japan just to be seen. We removed her mercury fillings, took out her metal crowns which had mercury fillings. She’s on her way to overall health, and that’s what we do.

We’re talking about health-oriented dentistry that’s focused on you as a person, not you as a bunch of parts that are all put together. We don’t fix teeth. We don’t fix your gums. We fix your health. That’s what the Center for Natural Dentistry does. If you want to schedule a visit with us, call 760-536-1199 or go online at trynaturaldentistry.com.

We also have a facebook page. We’re here every week, same time, same place, 8:30 every Saturday morning we’re here live. That means I am taking calls. I love calls. I love people that ask questions, so if you have questions, call us right now. It’s 866KPRAISE. 866-577-2473. Thanks for tuning in. If you’ve been here before, thanks for tuning in again. If you haven’t listened to this show before, then you’re in for a treat.

I always talk about something new. There’s only so much new stuff, but I realized that a lot of what I say is very new to certain people. I like to give people the background of who I am, what I believe in, the different type of approach. Believe it or not, we’re not for everybody. Our office, our type of dentistry is not for everyone. We’re not the “quick fix” type of people. We’re not the regular, mainstream dentist. We’re not the dentist where you go in, you see the dentist for about five minutes, you get your teeth cleaned, and if you have a problem, we just fix it, and you’re on your way. We look at the whole body.

Our technologies and approach are different from regular dentists. If you want a more comprehensive and proactive… Let’s say that you went to a dentist before, and you didn’t have a good experience, or they didn’t believe you. They rolled their eyes when you told them you didn’t want to have mercury fillings, or they looked at you funny and didn’t want to listen to you when you said you didn’t want any fluoride. You didn’t want a fluoride treatment, you didn’t want any fluoride fillings or anything like that. If they looked at you weird, that is common. That is very traditional with most dentists. Most dentists don’t want to hear it from our patients. If you’re the type of patient that is more in control of your health, you eat healthier, you’re figuring out that drugs are not the first solution,Ii you want a more natural approach, if you’re being more proactive, you don’t want to become sick in the future, and you’re trying to do something about it right now, then that’s what our dentistry is. We are licensed dentists here in California. Every single state has its own different license requirements, but we are licensed dentists here in California. Dr. Godes and I went to U.S. dental schools. One of the key advantages of coming to our office is that we know what mainstream dentistry is doing. We have done it ourselves. We learned from the same dental schools, we went to the same residency programs, we do the same education as everyone else, and we understand where everyone else is coming from.

But it took a little bit extra for Dr. Godes and I to look at the big picture and realize that fixing the teeth can cause problems with the overall health and the overall body. That’s what we focus on. We focus on you and you as a person in the future. We try to figure out what the true toxins are, remove the toxins, and don’t put more toxins in, so that you can keep your teeth healthy and strong, so that you can smile, so that you can eat the food that you want to eat for the future. It’s not about being reactive. It’s not about just fixing something when you have pain. It’s not about fixing something when something is obviously broken. This is about being more proactive and focusing on your overall health.

Hello, this is Dr. Marvin. You’re listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry. How can I help you?

Caller: Yes, I have a question. Would you recommend somebody who has mercury in their mouth to get pregnant? Is there any link between mercury and pregnancy?

Dr. Marvin: Good question, and your name?

Caller: My name is Jacqueline.

Dr. Marvin: Hi Jacqueline. Thanks for calling. Good question. Let me tell you a little story. My current wife and I have been married for almost 13 years. We met while I was in dental school, and in our dental school we were forced to do mercury fillings if we were supposed to do fillings in a back tooth. Part of our requirements was to work on a patient for the board exams. My girlfriend at the time and future wife– I ended up putting a mercury filling in. It was her first mercury filling, and it ended up being her last. One of the reasons they did it was because she was helping me out. She was really great. What I regret is putting that in there, because once you put mercury in your mouth, it’s in your body. When it’s in your body, it’s in your blood; it’s in your cells. Once it’s integrated into your body, it’s very hard to remove. We eventually had three children, and each one of our children was born with mercury toxicity. The problem is that once you conceive the child, that child is developing. Its nervous system, its brain, its spinal chord is all developing. Once you start developing, the mercury continues to feed that. Mercury is working against a child from that very start while it’s fetus, then it’s born, and mercury has been found in breast milk.

If you are not pregnant yet, then I suggest you get the mercury fillings out of your mouth first, detox the mercury from your body, and then start having kids. There has also been research which shows that if you’ve had mercury toxicity, there’s a good chance that you’re not going to have kids, because it makes it more difficult. Your body is not prepared to have kids, so people that haven’t had kids or have been trying to have a child for a while, you need to look at mercury as a possible reason why you’re not. Your body is just not ready; you need to detox that. My recommendation is to get the mercury out before you have kids.

If you’re already pregnant and you have mercury fillings in your mouth, it’s going to be a very difficult judgement call. The question is, do you get your mercury fillings taken out when you’re pregnant, or do you get your mercury fillings out when you’re done nursing? That window could be two, three, four years, depending on how long you plan to nurse. It really depends on the individual. When you’re in our office, you come in. Let’s say you’re five months pregnant or something like that. We test you with your sensitivity to the mercury fillings itself. We do that because if your body is sensitive to the mercury, then that will change the treatment plan. If you are not sensitive to the mercury, then there is a good possibility that we can go ahead and take out the mercury right then and there. When you remover mercury fillings from the mouth, you’re actually loading your body with more mercury because of the type of drilling. Most dentists do not remove mercury filling properly.

If you do decide you want to get rid of your mercury fillings before, during or after your pregnancy, you still have to remove it properly. You have to use the vacuums, the ionizers, rubber dams, low speed drills with high water content, high-speed evacuation. All of those things are protocols that they’re not taught in school but you still need to do. You want to minimize your exposure. You wouldn’t walk into a room full of asbestos and lead, if you knew that there was asbestos and lead in there. What I’m telling you is do not remove your mercury fillings, unless you go to someone who knows how to remove them properly. OK, Jacqueline?

Caller: OK. Can I ask you one more question regarding that?

Dr. Marvin: Yes.

Caller: If I remove the mercury and do it the safe way, how long after that should I wait before I start trying to get pregnant?

Dr. Marvin: A lot of that depends. You’re going to want to see Dr. Kellas or someone that knows how to remove mercury from your body, because just because you remove it out of your mouth does not mean it’s out of your body. Of course your mouth is part of your body. You could physically see that it’s not there, but you don’t know what the levels are in your cells. It’s in you kidneys, in your brains and all of that. You need to remove it from your body. The first step is always to remove it from your mouth, then remove it from your body. How long it takes depends on how easy it is to remove it from your body, how well you chelate, what your side effects are. It’s a process, and the earlier you start, the better off it is. Give us a call if you want to schedule an appointment. We can actually test to see if you’re doing a good job of excreting it already. If you’re doing a good job of excreting it, then that will change the treatment plan.

Caller: Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. That was really informative.

Dr. Marvin: You’re welcome, thank you. Tell your friends. Thanks for the call.

So yeah, it’s very, very important. If you’re of child bearing age, don’t go through what my children are going through, which is that they’re going to have mercury toxicity and all of these symptoms and allergies that are associated with it. We have to try to detox them after they’re born. It would be so much better for us to understand this early on in life and realize before we have kids that we need to get the mercury fillings out.

What about before we even have the mercury fillings? What if you’re a parent, and you have kids, and your dentist is saying, “Let’s go ahead and take out these cavities and put fillings in. It’s just mercury, it’s not a big deal. It’s just amalgam.” They don’t call them mercury fillings, they say ‘amalgam.’ That’s where it all starts. As an adult, as a parent, if you want to do what’s best for your children, do not put them through agony. Realize that this is a serious poison. You do not want to be exposed to it more that you have to. It makes common sense. You want to minimize the amount of exposure to poison, and you want to minimize the amount of mercury in the environment. There are so many reasons why you need to get this information and make the right choices, not only from your health’s standpoint, but also for the environment, your future, your children’s future and grandchildren’s future.

You’re listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry. If you have a question, give us a call. 866-577-2473.

One thing I want to get to today before the time runs up is I want to talk to you about a technology that we’ve employed in our office. Actually, I’ve known about it for a very long time, as long as I’ve been in private practice. For a good 13 years I’ve been using this technology. I want to share with you today what that technology is, because we don’t really talk about it much. It’s not really a part of the holistic or the natural approach in our office, so it doesn’t come across as our number one reason for coming here. It’s extremely important, because it’s rare. I have the experience of using this technology.

The technology I’m talk about is Cerec technology. The technology may sound new to you, but the technology has been out for almost 30 years. The technology is called CADCAM, computerated design and computerated machinery. Most of the things that you see out there, almost everything, you open your eyes and you look around, most things are designed through CADCAM, computerated design. In other words, they’re able to design the thing that you’re looking at on a computer first and make adjustments on the computer. Then there are machines that actually take the information from what’s on that computer and make it in real life. It saves a lot of time, energy and money, because you’re not wasting all the time constructing all of this, then making decisions afterward. You can design it and look at it from all the dimensions on the computer. It’s like a three dimensional view, and you can look at it from all angles. There are certain people that are very good at looking at that. There are certain programs out there that are really good too.

This CADCAM technology was brought to dentistry about 20 years ago through a company called Siemens, then it turned into a company called Sirona. I’ve always been involved with computers, and I’ve always loved tinkering and trying to figure things out. This technology has been around for about 30 years, and for the last 13 years I’ve been on the forefront of learning this technology and applying this technology. Not until recently, since I switched over to a more natural approach, since I switched over to looking at natural dentistry, I didn’t know that this technology is actually better for us patients from the holistic and natural point of view. That’s what I want to explain today.

This technology is about several things. The first is the materials. The materials that we use for this technology are non-metal. At the time I was doing it, metals look ugly. They make the dentistry look ugly, so I didn’t like using it. I was a cosmetic dentist; I wanted things to look more natural, so I ended up not using metal. I liked the technology from the standpoint that it wasn’t metal. It’s more compatible. That’s not only from the aesthetic point of view, but it’s more compatible. We’re using nice porcelain. Porcelain is just fine-ground sand that is put together in one piece.

The next reason I like it is because I get to remove less tooth. In other words, less drilling. I don’t want to remove your good, strong, healthy enamel. Because of that, we are preserving and conserving tooth structure. That’s a very holistic and very natural approach. You’re not going to remove more in order to save a tooth. I love this technology to do that. In order to do that technology we have to bond to the tooth. That’s newer technology where we can actually chemically adhere something flat to something else that’s flat, so we don’t have to remove more tooth structure.

From an aesthetic standpoint there’s no metal. From a bio-compatible standpoint the material is more compatible. Also from a conservation standpoint we get to conserve tooth structure, so we don’t have to remove more tooth than necessary. That is great technology. That’s the reason why I’ve used this from the start and why I continue to use this.

Hello this is Dr. Marvin on Let’s Talk Dentistry. How can I serve you?

Caller: I have a question. I recently had a tooth removed because I didn’t want to do a root canal. I actually didn’t do it because I’ve been listening to your podcasts, so thank you. The dentist told me that instead of getting an implant (I don’t want to get titanium), I could remove my wisdom tooth and just push my teeth together somehow. That all sounds really crazy. Have you heard of this being done, and is that safe?

Dr. Marvin: Oh absolutely, but it’s not a good idea. The reason is because I look at the big picture. The big picture is your bite. Your teeth are in their position, because that’s where nature wanted them to go, unless you’ve had braces in the past. You do not want to move teeth without looking at what it’s going to do to your mouth, to your jaw and to your overall structure. Absolutely don’t look at it unless you’re going to a dentist who looks at the big picture.

Dentists like to think that they can just move teeth wherever they want and place them wherever they want. The reality is that you don’t want to do it. I’ll give you an example. If you have a house and there is a wall that is supporting a good part of the house, you really can’t move that wall. Dentists think that they can move walls wherever they want. They can pick it up and move it here or move it there. It’s just not that easy. You’re going to ruin the structure of the whole house if you remove that wall. You’re going to remove the structure of the whole mouth and actually the whole body if you start moving teeth that way.

The other thing is that we do ceramic implants, so there is an alternative to titanium implants. We test our patients. I’m actually holding a course next weekend on Saturday for dentists in order to do ceramic implants. We are the experts on this stuff, so we test you for the compatibility. We also want to make sure that when the dentist removed your tooth he also removed the infection that’s below the tooth. That’s very important, because you can’t place an implant into an infection for obvious reasons.

Make sure you take that into consideration. If you want our opinion, give us a call, schedule an exam and we’ll give you our best bet. It is pretty radical; most dentists don’t do that procedure where you take out the wisdom teeth and try to move teeth around. It’s not a good idea for the most part.

Caller: Just to touch on that, I know your pressed for time. Can you tell me why the ceramic replacement over titanium?

Dr. Marvin: For the implant?

Caller: Yes.

Dr. Marvin: What you’re talking about is either a ceramic or zirconium abutment, which is the interconnecting piece between the crown and the implant, or a porcelain crown that’s on top. Really, it doesn’t matter. It’s really the titanium. You have to check the compatibility of all the products, no matter what. Titanium hips have shown that people who have titanium hips have titanium oxides floating throughout the body. That’s one of the problems with titanium, and that’s why I don’t recommend people using it. Not unless they’re really compatible and they really want to do implants.

You want to make sure that you look at it not only from the mechanical standpoint– that’s what other dentists do. They figure out what’s strong, what’s weak, what connects, blah, blah, blah. You want to look at things from a biological standpoint, because that’s more important than mechanical.

Caller: So obviously you have what you’re compatible with at your office?

Dr. Marvin: Yeah. For the stuff that we use. We don’t test the compatibility with every product under the sun, because there is just way to much product. Why do test something if we know it’s not good for you?

Caller: Thank you so much. I appreciate your information.

Dr. Marvin: You’re welcome. Thanks for listening and thanks for the call. That’s a great call on implants and also some newer procedures.

That’s true. Dentists think that thinks are pretty easy. From the small picture point of view, it is really easy. It’s kind of like when your kid says, “Mom, Dad, let’s buy a dog.” The parents have to look at the big picture. What are the costs going to be? What if it gets sick? Who’s going to take care of it if we go away? That’s what you have to do as an adult. Look at the big picture and realize that it may sound like a fun, fluffy idea, but it’s not as easy as it appears.

You don’t want to move walls in your mouth and your house if that’s a stress-bearing wall. If you want to remodel your house, you just don’t move that wall. It’s the same thing in the mouth. God created our mouth and our teeth for a reason. It’s not to be moved around. We need to figure out why, or the root cause of things. It’s that simple. We should use common sense, most doctors and dentists do not.

If you want to schedule a visit with me or with Dr. Godes, all you have to do is give us a call. 760-536-1199. If this is your first time listening to us, I encourage you to go online, visit our website, trynaturaldentistry.com. Spend five, ten or fifteen minutes to start looking at what we believe in.

If this resonates with you, if this is something that makes sense to you, if I’m making sense to you right now, then you should be going to a dentist that believes the same things you believe. If you think nutrition plays a role in your health, then you go to a dentist that believes that too. Not one that just believes, ‘Yeah, we can repair this tooth by doing a root canal. Then we have to do a post, then a build up. Then we have to do crown lengthening, and then we have to put a crown.’ It’s all that alien talk. What you need to do is figure out what’s best for your health. It’s that simple. I only make recommendations based on what I would do if it were my mouth. Of course I know a lot more about health and dentistry than a lot of you listeners out there. That’s the reason why you come to me, because I’m going to give you what I would do. I sleep well at night. I’m not tricking you. I’m not removing more tooth than necessary, so I can do a crown, so insurances will reimburse me more. That’s what’s going through other dentists’ heads. I just do what’s best for you, what’s best for your mouth, and what’s best for your gums, so that you can live a life of health. It’s that simple.

I’m Dr. Marvin. You’re listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry. I’m here every week, same time, same place, 8:30. We had two great callers today. Thank you for calling.

If you want schedule a visit with us, and you want to take advantage of the Cerec technology, for the first three callers I’m going to give them $100 off their restoration when we use the Cerec treatment. $100 off, that’s a great deal. 760-536-1199. First three callers get $100 off their Cerec restoration.

I’ll see you same time, same place next week. Have a good one. Goodbye now.
