Hello, this is Dr. Marvin. You’re our first caller, how can I help you?

Stacy:               Hi, good morning.

Dr. Marvin:       Good morning.

Stacy:               I wanted to know is there anything wrong with chewing ice. Does it mess up your teeth? Does it move your jaw line out of alignment? Is there anything – especially if the ice is soft and it’s not that hard, hard, hard ice that takes forever to melt?

Dr. Marvin:       Okay, very good. What’s your name, Ma’am?

Stacy:               Stacy.

Dr. Marvin:       Hi, Stacy. Great question. Haven’t had that question on air before so it’s probably a question that a lot of people want to have answered. I know a lot of people eat ice for many different reasons and at first ice is pretty hard. Just like anything else that you eat. If you eat hard candy, it can cause your teeth to become a little bit more brittle. Teeth respond to heat and cold and a lot of times when your teeth get cold, they shrink and they contract and when they get hot they expand the enamel and the dentine.            So that’s probably one thing that you want to be careful of if you have deep cavities or very sensitive teeth, you can actually cause them to be more sensitive by the contraction and expansion of the teeth.

Other things are is that when you drink or when you bite into or chew into ice, that puts a lot of wear and tear on the teeth. And if you have excessive wear and tear in your teeth naturally let’s say, if you grind or brux or clench your teeth, that’s just adding undue wear or unnecessary wear to the teeth. So, I typically recommend people don’t chew ice and actually, I don’t recommend people chew gum. That’s just more wear and tear.

Talking about the jaw line, when it comes to excessive wear on your teeth, actually when you chew gum a lot or when you chew ice a lot, your muscles that help control the jaw that move it up and down and chew it tend to get stronger. And when you have strong muscles, you ended having stronger bones and that causes more wear and tear in the teeth. And unfortunately, teeth don’t get stronger with time and they actually get weaker with time and they get brittle, the cracks start to form, the cracks get bigger and that’s when you have tooth problems that most dentists would love to fix for you.

So, in general, I don’t recommend chewing ice. If it’s a habit, then this is one of the habits that I recommend you break.

Stacy:               Okay. So, going back to what you said. Talking about the hard candy, that I don’t eat.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay, good.

Stacy:               But as far as ice goes, what I do is I drink a lot of water, excuse me and what I do is let it sit so that ice can be really soft…

Dr. Marvin:       Okay.

Stacy:               …and I can tell when the ice is getting really soft when it starts getting smaller…

Dr. Marvin:       Right.

Stacy:               …or whatnot. And then I go ahead and drink up the water and normally chew the ice. But it’s soft, it’s not like I said it’s not like hard candy at that time.

Dr. Marvin:       Yes, I’m sure it’s a lot better. I’m sure it’s a lot better. I’m sure it’s as soft or softer than a lot of the foods that you eat. So, I think at that point, I think it’s okay.

Stacy:               Okay.

Dr. Marvin:       Alright.

Stacy:               Alright, thank you so much.

Dr. Marvin:       Thanks for the call, Stacy. You call back next time, okay.

Stacy:               I will. Thank you.

Dr. Marvin:       Thank you.

Stacy:               Bye bye.

Dr. Marvin:       Bye bye. That’s a great question, it’s about chewing ice. So, if you chew any ice or if you chew gum fairly often to stay awake or just because you enjoy chewing gum, just kind of keep that in mind, you’re just adding more wear and tear to the teeth. It’s kind of like if you were to walk around all day on your feet – on your feet and your legs get tired, if you do that every single day then your legs will get more and more tired. It’s just more wear and tear on your teeth. You may have arthritis, you may have hip problems. It just commonly makes sense. So, if you chew gum or if you chew ice or anything like that, just kind of keep that in mind.

I also want people to understand that most dentists don’t look at how the teeth come together, and the wear and tear on the teeth and look at all the evidence inside the mouth. I have a good patient of mine that came in just yesterday. The wife of a good friend of mine and she came in and she said that she had perfect teeth, perfect – just needed a cleaning and that was it, no cavities or had had cavities in the past, but really small, has a great diet and all of that.

Well, she came in and we found some things that really blew her mind. When she – she knew that we do Natural Dentistry and she’d been going to the regular dentist for a long time. And if you go to the regular dentists and they say, oh, yeah, everything looks fine you’re just going on the rest of your life thinking everything was fine until something happens and then you get it fixed. You’re pretty much waiting for a symptom to occur, such as pain or soreness or anything like that.

Well, this is what we found out on her. We found out that A, she has a bite issue. She has big tori on her teeth and when she bites down, those tori start to get bigger. Dentists have noticed it before, but she hasn’t really said – they haven’t really said anything about it. They just observed and just watched it. Well, that’s something that we don’t do at the office. What we do is we inform, we tell you what’s going to happen in the future, what are the pros and cons of doing something. And we also have solutions and one of the solutions that we’re going to do for her is a bite. So, we’re going to balance out her bite, get her into a bite guard that goes onto her lower jaw and she’s going to be better.

We also found out that she didn’t want to have X-rays. So, we talked to her a little bit about X-rays and told her about our special 3D or Cone Beam CT scanner, one of the few here in San Diego, and we are able to say this is something that’s very important. We did some testing and found out that on the X-ray and in the mouth, there is something that’s causing her problems from her wisdom teeth that were probably extracted 20 to 25 years ago. So, in the area where she had the wisdom teeth, there’s problems, there is some bacteria in there, the body didn’t heal around it, it’s called the cavitation. We are going to go ahead and take an X-ray. We saw it on the X-ray and we’re going to move forward with it.

Actually, we’re going to move forward with the treatment that I was going to talk today about which is Ozone therapy. So, it’s a good segue way into our next topic because we are now – we have now implemented Ozone therapy in our office. And if you want more information about this, we’re going to start putting more stuff on our website at trynaturaldentistry.com. We’re going to start doing stuff, putting more stuff on our Facebook page. If you go ahead – if you have Facebook, I suggest you go to our Facebook page, like it and find out more information about ozone, that’s facebook.com/naturaldentistry, it’s almost like our website and find out more information about that. We still have, for a limited time, our list of biocompatible materials.             So, if you are going to the dentist and you want to have more biocompatible materials or a list of biocompatible materials, you can go on our Facebook page and get that. Just kind of keep that in mind that just because I have a list of biocompatible materials does not mean that all the materials are good for you. That’s why we get tested to make sure that the materials are the best for you.

So, let’s get back to natural Ozone therapy or Oxygen-Ozone therapy. Let me tell you a little bit about the history. About three weeks ago, Dr. Godes, our new associate, she went to a course on Oxygen Therapy or Ozone therapy and this is a course that I was originally registered for, but there was a meeting that had to come up and in the last two weeks, you heard my show with Dr. Don Ewing. In actuality, I was in the Philippines helping my manufacturer of mine a mouthwash, my oral rinse. If you ever try my mouthwash, you’re in for a treat. And I want you to encourage you to refill on that mouthwash because I found out so much more about this.

The manufacturer is a great friend of mine. He’s a chemist. He found out more information about the oxychloro or stabilized chlorine dioxide which is just a phenomenal antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral and that’s where I went for the last two weeks. So, if you’re wondering was that a live show, it wasn’t a live show, but we did have Dr. Don and she’s a great friend of mine and hopefully you got some great information.

You’re listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry. Our phone lines are open, 866-KPRAISE, 866-577-2473. We got another 15 minutes here. So, if you have any questions about natural dentistry, please give me a call right now.

What we’re talking about is Ozone or Oxygen Ozone therapy in dentistry and I’m going tell you once that Dr. Stacy Godes came back I was absolutely floored by all the information that she came back because I am saddened to let you know that I was always hesitant to start into this type of treatments or ozone treatments.

But I am sad because I didn’t tell you about this sooner and I am sad because I didn’t know about this sooner and I’m sad because most people, most dentists don’t know about this because it has some phenomenal effects. And some of the things that we’ve done already in the last two weeks since we have had the Ozone therapy was reversing some sensitivity in your teeth. This is a big problem going on these days, sensitive teeth.

If you have sensitive teeth, you’ll see all the commercials about Sensodyne toothpaste, Sensitive Colgate, everything, everyone has sensitive teeth. Part of the reason is because of the bite so you need to fix the root cause of the problem, but if you still has sensitive teeth, we are now using Ozone therapy to treat sensitive teeth and actually some other features.

I got a caller. Hello, this is Let’s Talk Dentistry with Dr. Marvin, how may I serve you?

Veronica:         Hi, I’m calling because I had a root canal done several years ago in Mexico. And I’d like to get it pulled out.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay.

Veronica:         However, I don’t know that my dentist was talking about maybe putting a crown or a bridge or something on there and I just wanted to get it taken out.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay.

Veronica:         Completely.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay. Tell me why you want to have it taken out.

Veronica:         Because it causes pain and there is some like a mark on there, like a black mark and I have to go – I need to find out and see if, I guess, they said that they probably used materials that weren’t good.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay, very good. Have you listened to my show for a while now?

Veronica:         No.

Dr. Marvin:       No.

Veronica:         No.

Dr. Marvin:       No, okay. What’s your name, ma’am?

Veronica:         Veronica.

Dr. Marvin:       Veronica, thanks for calling me. Root canals are a very, very touchy subject especially when I talk about them. Root canals, in my opinion, are some of the root causes of most chronic illnesses. There’s this thing, it’s called a dental foci or a dental infection. When there’s a dental infection in the mouth it can go elsewhere in the body and causes secondary infection. So, it’s one of the main causes of a lot of infections in the body and also one of the causes for immune system to go down.

So, I always talk about how root canals should be an absolute last resort and if you do one to save the tooth, the root canal is a good therapy, but it’s not good for your overall health. And what we talk about is overall health, holistic dentistry, natural dentistry and a lot of the products that are used in root canal therapy are not good. So, that’s a little bit of background on root canal. So, I’m a little biased against root canal. So, I actually applaud or congratulate you for making that decision to have the tooth taken out.

Veronica:         Yes.

Dr. Marvin:       When it comes to extracting the teeth, you want to make sure that the tooth is extracted, but more importantly that little black spot that’s on the X-ray be extracted too. You want to make sure that all the infections taken out so you don’t get any holes left in your jawbone that contain that bacteria that produce toxins and infect the rest of the body. So, that’s one thing when you get the tooth taken out that you get the sides of the socket scraped out. We do a lot of testing to make sure it’s all taken out and we also do a lot of different bacterial, antimicrobial therapy in order to get that taken out.

Now, here’s the next hardest question is, A, should I replace the tooth. So, it depends on which tooth is being replaced. And then B, how do you replace it. And that’s a very hard question to answer over the radio. Is that what your question is?

Veronica:         Yes.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay. Basically, there’s – in general, there’s basically three options. One option is to not replace it. If you don’t replace it, what will happen? Will the teeth fall into that place? I’m going to tell you that sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Dentists will always say, you need to replace it right away because if you don’t replace it, then you got all these, all hell will break loose.

Veronica:         Yes.

Dr. Marvin:       It doesn’t always happen, but it does happen and if it does happen, it doesn’t happen overnight. So, if you’re able to observe it and see, oh, my tooth is coming down and filling up that space in the teeth that space is closing because the other teeth are falling into that place, then you do want to take care of that.

One of the most conservative options is to do something that’s removable. When I say it’s removable, that means something that you take in and out to clean, then you put it back in to hold the space. It tends to not to be the strongest, it tends not to be the prettiest, but it is the most conservative, meaning that you don’t have to chop down the two neighboring teeth in order to save it.

Now, if you decide to chop down the two neighboring teeth, I highly suggest that you do it very minimally. And this involved a nonmetal, because I’m metal-free. I don’t like to have any metal in the mouth, nonmetal inlay bridge. That means that you only do side of like fillings on the two neighboring teeth and you use a strong nonmetal restoration in order to put this bridge into place. So, this is called an inlay bridge.

Veronica:         Yes.

Dr. Marvin:       A lot of dentists don’t do it because it’s a lot harder, it’s just something that they haven’t done before and so it’s not something that they recommend. But this is something that we do plenty in our office.

The other option are implants. Now, here’s the problem with implants. The implant is you need to have bone in order for the implant to be placed. Do not force the implant to be placed in an infected area. So, never get the implant placed soon after you get the tooth extracted. You want the tooth extracted properly. You want it to heal and then you want to have the implant placed properly.

Then, when this implant is placed properly, that means the longest widest implant possible with the amount of bone available. When you get that placed, you want to make sure it’s placed accurately and then you want to have a crown put on it. Now here’s the problem, they put them on metal crowns and they put in metal implants.

Again, I don’t put any metal in the mouth. So, we use ceramic implants. So, just a lot of things, I don’t want to throw in a lot of things at you, but this is exactly what we talk about at our visits when you come visit our office and we go through which option is best for you. And it’s very difficult for a person like yourself to know which is best for you without the experience of a natural dentist.

Veronica:         Okay.

Dr. Marvin:       So, hopefully that helped. I know I went through that really quickly.

Veronica:         I’m taking notes. That was good.

Dr. Marvin:       Sounds good.

Veronica:         Let me ask you, how do I – what’s the number to your office and insurance do you guys take.

Dr. Marvin:       Yeah, very good question. If you can go to any dentists then you can come to us. What we do is we help you with insurance, we’ll get your information and then we’ll go ahead and provide the claim and all the necessary X-rays or charting that’s necessary in order for you to get reimbursed. So, we do accept insurance and you get will – you will be get reimbursed for treatment that the employer or the insurance company covers. Our telephone number at our office is 760-536-1199.

Veronica:         Okay.

Dr. Marvin:       Alright. Hopefully that was good information. I’d love to see you in the office. I do all the new patient exams and I’ll be able to help diagnose and treat and give you the best possible information options available for that tooth.

Veronica:         Perfect.

Dr. Marvin:       Alright.

Veronica:         Thank you so much.

Dr. Marvin:       Thanks, Veronica.

Veronica:         Okay, bye bye.

Dr. Marvin:       Bye bye. Yeah, we get a lot of people with root canals that still have lingering problems. Their dentist wants to continue to save it. They want to do a retreatment of the root canal. They want to do all these stuff and I’m going to tell you that’s not always the best option. So, if you want an option or if you want a second opinion about that, give us a call at 760-536-1199.

Hello, this is Dr. Marvin of Let’s Talk Dentistry, how may I serve you?

Male Caller:      Hello, sir. How are you doing?

Dr. Marvin:       Good.

Male Caller:      I was listening over the last few weeks how you talked about metals in the mouth and I’m just wondering when – if you cook your food like in a frying pan or you eat with forks and knives, are you taking any metal into your system?

Dr. Marvin:       Sometimes yes and sometimes no. We use a special at our house. We got rid of all of our pots and pans and I don’t know if you’ve had people come over and show you kind of the difference between pots and pans and all these special nonstick stuff about Teflons and all of that stuff. Well, a lot of that metal is actually bled into the water or that you’re cooking or the foods that you’re cooking. And it really changes the flavor of the food. And same thing, if you also – if it goes to the food and then to your body when you eat it, then it’s kind of like you’re taking in all those metals and all those chemicals and stuff like that.

So, there are things that react, but it’s not necessarily taking in the metals, it depends on the – what does the metal do? Does it degas or does it give off gas and do you inhale it? And that’s my issue with mercury. So, mercury or alloy fillings, it actually gives off a gas or a vapor that you inhale. It’s not like it’s actually just scraped off when you chew and those particles go into our body.

Which kind of leads me is like when you ever had your mercury fillings taken out, it’s not necessarily the particles of the mercury – mercury particles that are in the filling that goes into your body through all the scrapings if they don’t take precautions to remove it out. It’s more of the heat that’s generating and all that vapor.

It kind of like if you don’t know – if you know a nebulizer is or if you have small particles in the air. Let’s say you work in a laboratory with these chemicals. Let’s say you clean around the house, you have all those air particles like ammonia and stuff like that. When you inhale it, it’s a very easy way for you – it to get into the body. It’s not necessarily the particles.

So, when you have those stainless steel spoons and forks and all of that, you’re not really getting too much metal into your body just by putting your lips on it. Because that type of metal doesn’t really degas. What I’m concerned about is that if you’re going to install something in your body for the rest of your life and you’re not getting tested on the materials that it’s made out of, you can develop an allergy or sensitivity to it and I see it a lot inside the mouth where the gums start to get red.

If you’ve learned about custom jewelry, if you ever put some jewelry on, really cheap jewelry that you find in a street fair or something like that and costs like $0.30 or $1. It looks really nice, but you put it in your skin, you put it. Let’s say it’s a ring. And you put it on your skin and then after a day or two, your skin, there’s a little red line or it turns green around the skin. You’ll know, okay, that’s not good for me. I’m not going to use that. That’s a reaction. Well, that’s a lot of that materials used inside the mouth.

So, I always recommend that you don’t use that because your body is just simply reacting against this. So, that’s why we’ve gone 100% metal-free in our office. So, those are some of the reasons why we don’t use metals, but when it comes to spoons and forks and pots and pans, I suggest you use the more natural types ones that don’t leach into the food, but I don’t think that’s a huge concern as opposed to putting metals inside the mouth.

Male Caller:      Thank you.

Dr. Marvin:       Okay. Thanks for the call. Good questions today. We got three great calls already this morning. If you have a question and you want to give us a call, it’s 866-KPRAISE, 866-577-2473. We also – we’re talking about Ozone therapy. Ozone therapy is great. What I’m going to do is going to offer everyone a special today. For the first six callers, I’m going to give you a free Ozone consult. If you were curious about Ozone and want to know more about it, we are actually reversing cavities.

That’s right. If you have a cavity and it’s big and you didn’t want to have it filled, we are actually using Ozone to kill the bacteria or re-mineralizing the teeth and actually reversing cavity. This is amazing stuff and Dr. Stacy Godes came back and I was like you’re kidding me, this changes everything. The game has changed, Ozone therapy on the teeth. We’re talking only about a minute of Ozone on the teeth and re-mineralizing these teeth so you don’t have to have a filling. And when it’s ozonated and the tooth hardens up, you’re never going to have a cavity in that area and I mean never.

So, if you have tooth sensitivity, if you have problems, we’re using this in extractions, we’re using this for cavitations. We have so many uses for this. If you have any questions about Ozone therapy, I suggest you call our office right now. First six callers, we’ll give you a free Ozone consult, 760-536-1199. You’ll get a consult with Dr. Stacy Godes. She’s going to give you all the information about Ozone therapy and how and what they can do for you. It changes everything. If you have a root canal, if you have a tooth that has a problem, if you have an extraction, if you have a root canal therapy, if you have cavity, I mean all of these stuff. That’s our special for today. I didn’t get too far into it. You got gum disease, give us a call right now, 760-536-1199.

I’ll talk to you next week. It’s a great show, great callers. I love you all. Keep smiling and give us a call, 760-536-1199. Goodbye now.

Female:           You’ve been listening to Let’s Talk Dentistry with Dr. Marvin. This show is sponsored by the Center for Natural Dentistry in Encinitas where they take a holistic approach to dentistry and your health.
